Interactive Book Research:

I have continued to think about target audiences. For this research, I've started to think about how I can draw in the viewers attention to the illustrations and the story. I've been looking at different ways on how I could visually present my work. This could be by experimenting with layouts, designs and mediums. All of these elements can be used in inventive ways to engage young readers. I have watched a range of short clips that show examples of interactive books.

The first book that I've looked at is called 'There Are Cats in This Book' by Viviane Schwarz. This book has many paper folds and text that encourage and engage the reader to turn to the next page. I believe that this layout is effective as it allows children to use their imagination. Viviane has also created another book called 'There Are No Cats in This Book'. This book shows the same cats who want to leave the book to explore the world. I think the visuals and layout within this book are successful because Viviane has created new ways of including the reader. She has done this by including pull out pieces, a pop up page and by adding a small post card.

Another clip that I've watched shows the book 'Oh No!' by Patrick George. This book creates new images when turning over the designs that are printed onto acetate. This technique is effective as it shows the uses of experimentation and how we can re-use certain elements to create a new illustrations. Another reason on why I believe this book is successful is because the story is told through images alone. I believe that this is clever because it allows the reader to be imaginative.

Lastly, I've looked at a clip that presents how you can experiment with different mediums. This interactive book is made of felt. There are a number of activities within this book that encourage children to problem solve. Also, this book is educational as it includes activities that involve counting and spelling. Overall, I think this book is successful because the visuals and the layout allows children to learn.

There are a number of other clips that I've watched for this research. This research has been helpful because I've been able to see how different mediums, designs and layouts can make a difference to how young readers engage with a book. This is now going to allow me to consider a variety of ideas on how I could make my dummy book more interesting and educational for my chosen target audience.
